Helpful Information for Volunteers

Thursday’s Table meals are prepared by a certified food preparer from the Northfield School District with the help from community volunteers every Thursday night in the dining room of the Northfield Community Resource Center. The menus are planned in advance by the Community Action Center (CAC) and most of the food is purchased by the CAC through the Second Harvest Food Bank.
When arriving at the beginning of your volunteer time shift please check in with the Thursday’s Table volunteer coordinator; they will sign you in and give you a name tag with your job assignment and an apron for you to wear.
You are welcome to sit down and eat dinner either before or after your time shift or during if there are enough volunteers to take turns. You may invite other family members to come and eat with you and socialize with other dinner guests. Children are certainly welcome to come and eat and participate in the evening children’s activity, however, we ask that they be accompanied by another adult.
Kitchen Volunteers:
- If you are assigned to the kitchen as a food preparer, a food server or as part of one of the cleaning crews, you will be directed to the School District’s kitchen manager who will go over the kitchen rules and orient you to the kitchen routine. The kitchen supervisor will assign specific tasks for you to complete and this person will be your supervisor throughout your time shift. Please understand that some nights will be busier than others depending on the meal that is being served. When your shift ends it’s important that you leave the kitchen so that another person can take your place. There is a limit to the number of people that can be in the kitchen at any one time.
What to Wear in the Kitchen: Please keep in mind that the kitchen gets very warm.
· Comfortable shoes and socks (no barefoot sandals).
· A shirt with either short or long sleeves (not sleeveless) and long pants (no shorts).
· If your hair touches your collar please tie it back.
· Please don’t wear jewelry – wedding rings are okay J
Dining Room Volunteers:
- If you are assigned to the dining room, the Thursday’s Table volunteer coordinator will give you a brief orientation to explain your assignment and this person will be your supervisor throughout your time shift. When your shift is over it is important to turn in your apron to the coordinator so another volunteer can take your place.

Wellness Policy for All Volunteers: If you are not feeling well (100%), if you have a runny nose, are sneezing or coughing, please defer your volunteer time until you are feeling better. Please contact the Thursday’s Table coordinator to let them know you are not coming. We will be happy to schedule you to volunteer when you are feeling better!
