We will host an open house to celebrate the contributions of all of our dedicated volunteers on Wednesday, May 2 from 3:00 until 4:30. The event will be held in the lobby area of the Human Services Wing of the NCRC.

WCCO Good Neighbor Award

Several years after Arnie Witt moved to Northfield, he visited the CAC to become involved as a volunteer. Arnie had recently retired from a career in education and was eager to help people in his new community. The CAC needed a volunteer to go to local groceries each week to pick up food donations. Now, twelve years later, he continues to make twice-weekly trips to four groceries. He also works at least one day each month in the Food Shelf. In 2011 Arnie personally picked up, delivered and weighed over 10 tons of food!

Arnie is an expert in all aspects of our food distribution, and he is a huge asset to the Community Action Center. After volunteering for the past dozen years, Arnie continues saying that he gets much more than he gives, and remains committed to helping the CAC prevent hunger in Northfield. Arnie is a true treasure, and we are grateful he stopped into the CAC to volunteer his time!

Seeking Nominations for Election to Board of Directors

The Community Action Center is seeking nominations for election to its Board of Directors. You may nominate yourself or someone else by completing an application and include a letter addressing the nominee’s skills, background, term availability and interest in serving on the Board. Nominations will be reviewed for upcoming vacancies and will be maintained for future consideration.

The Board meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 a.m. and a commitment to membership is normally for up to three consecutive two year terms.

Summer Camp Scholarships

The Community Action Center has received funding from the Pohlad Family Foundation and the Deane Barbour memorial funds to send kids to overnight camps. Children can learn outdoor survival skills, boat, swim, ride a horse, learn a language, or make new friends all while having lots of fun.

Popular summer camps fill early, so contact us to find out more!

We are also seeking new or gently used supplies for campers. We need sleeping bags, beach towels, sunscreen, and non-aerosol insect repellent. If you or your group would like to help our campers by donating these items, please call us.

March FoodShare

March is Minnesota FoodShare month. Fortunately we live in a community that cares and, through our food shelf, works to be sure that no one needs to be hungry.

During March the CAC participates in the Minnesota FoodShare campaign, raising awareness and funds to support our food shelf throughout the year. This year our goal is to raise $130,000 and/or pounds of food. Please consider a gift to the food shelf with a contribution of money or food!

Give Kids a Smile

Each February, the American Dental Association sponsors, “Give Kids A Smile” day. We are pleased that this year the Johnson Dental Clinic, located at 505 Woodley Street in Northfield, participated in this event on February 3. Sixteen children 12 and under received a free dental exam, cleaning, sealants and minor restorative care. Thanks to Johnson Dental for offering this service to the Northfield community!

Christmas Sharing

The elves of Christmas Sharing are busy preparing for the big day that is only two weeks away! But, there is still time to help by making a donation or bringing a gift. Gifts for teens are especially needed, and monetary contributions are accepted throughout the season. Please join us in making Christmas merry for over 900 children who will be served this year!

Homelessness Summit

On Thursday, November 17 from 2:00 – 4:00, the Rice County Homeless Response Team will sponsor an information session on the realities facing the homeless in our area. This event is part of the nationwide “Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week” that is held each year during the week before Thanksgiving.

In 2010-11, thirty homeless households used the Community Action Center’s emergency shelter program. These households included 19 children. Homelessness in small cities and rural areas is often less visible than in big cities, but the issue exists here too.

The Homelessness Summit will be held at South Central College in Faribault. For more information contact Sue Warring at the Community Action Center or Gina at 507-332-2236.
