Nursing Assistant Training

The Community Action Center, in partnership with South Central College, will offer classes for those interested in becoming a certified nursing assistant. Classes will be offered from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning September 14 and ending in December. The tuition is waived for CAC clients.

An orientation will be held on August 16 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm at Three Links Care Center, 815 Forest Avenue in Northfield. For more information or to sign up for the orientation, call the CAC at 664-3550 or Bob Kell at 507-333-5036.

Ronald McDonald Dental Van

: Ronald McDonald Dental Van

The Ronald McDonald Charities dental van comes to the Community Action Center on the first Wednesday of each month. The van includes two dental chairs staffed by a dentist, a hygienist, and dental assistant. The caring professionals offer cleanings and exams, fillings, and referrals for more complicated care to those 21 and under.

Money Management Classes

On July 15 and 29 we will again offer our money management classes. The class meets from 6:00 to 8:30 pm in Room 222 at the NCRC. Preregistration is required. Participants are invited to have dinner at Thursday’s Table starting at 5:00 before attending the free classes. Participants who attend both sessions will receive a certificate of completion. The curriculum includes budgeting to save, paying off your bills, building good credit, tips for taxes, and protection from scams and identity theft.

Interns at the CAC

The CAC is happy to host two interns from the “Leaders for Social Change” program at St Olaf. This summer nine students were selected for the program. Students work at area non-profits, live in a St Olaf house, and particpate in weekly seminars. Signe Knutson and Daniel Murphy will be with us through August 6.

Volunteering

We are fortunate that many in our community want to help the clients of the CAC in tangible ways. Here are just a few ways that individuals or groups can help:

Birthday bags: Create a bag that includes items a parent needs to host a child’s birthday party. It may include a cake mix, party plates and napkins, and party favors.

Camper kits: The kids we send to camp need sleeping bags, beach towels, sunscreen, and insect repellant.

Hygiene kits: Make a personal hygiene kit for those staying in our homeless shelter. Items such as combs, toothbrushes, and shampoo are needed.

Quilts and Afghans: Sew or knit quilts or afghans that each family is given at Christmas Sharing.

Reusable grocery bags: Sew fabric bags that foodshelf customers can re-use each month.

Board Members Needed

The Community Action Center is seeking nominations for election to its Board of Directors. You may nominate yourself or someone else by writing a letter describing your skills, background, and interest in serving on the Board. The Board meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 a.m.

Inquiries may be directed to Jim Blaha, Executive Director of the Community Action Center at 664-3550. Letters of nomination may be sent to Jim Blaha at 1651 Jefferson Parkway, HS 200, Northfield 55057. Nominations should be received by June 18, 2010.

Clothes Closet Bag Sale

On Thursday, June 17, the Clothes Closet will have its monthly bag sale. Everything you can fit in a bag for just $7! Items that are too large to fit in a bag will be half price. Everyone is encouraged to support the Community Action Center by shopping at the Clothes Closet.

Stamp Out Hunger

On Saturday, May 8, Northfield area letter carriers will participate in the national “Stamp Out Hunger” food collection to provide assistance to the many people in our area who struggle with hunger.

To help “Stamp Out Hunger”, simply leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, like canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal, next to your mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 8. Food items should be in non-breakable containers, such as boxes and cans. Your letter carrier will collect donations from homes across Northfield and deliver them to the Community Action Center’s food shelf where it is distributed to those who visit the foodshelf.

Empty Bowls Project Benefits Food Shelf

At noon on May 14 the community is invited to lunch at the Carleton Bald Spot. Students of ceramics will host a soup and bread luncheon known as “Empty Bowls.” Carleton art professor Kelly Connole and her students have created 480 bowls. Diners can purchase a bowl for $10 and fill it with soups for a delicious and satisfying meal! Proceeds from the event are donated to the Community Action Center Food Shelf.

Goods for Good at the Clothes Closet

The Clothes Closet will participate in the annual “Goods for Good” sponsored by 5th Bridge. All items in the Clothes Closet will be half price on Friday, April 30 and Saturday, May 1. The Clothes Closet will be open from 9:00 – 5:00 on Friday and 9:00 until noon on Saturday.

Goods for Good is an annual community-wide garage sale where proceeds benefit charities selected by each site. See 5thbridge.org to obtain a map with all participating sites and the charities that will benefit.
