March is the
Campaign!
March has begun and so has the 2009 March Minnesota FoodShare Campaign! A recent article in the Star Tribune highlighted that Minnesotans are missing 125 million meals every year. On average, the 950,000 low-income Minnesotans near the metro area miss 8 percent of their meals – which calculates to missing over 87 meals per year per person!
These statistics are shocking and at the CAC Food Shelf we actively address these numbers in Northfield. The Food Shelf provides our neighbors with good nutrition, a key factor in maintaining health and relationships that ultimately lead to a better life for the whole community. Throughout this past year the CAC Food Shelf has been serving food to an unprecedented number of people. More than four hundred families each month use the shelf as a mainstay for their nutrition, half of whom are children and one quarter who are elderly. In 2008, CAC delivered 357,000 pounds of food with the gracious assistance of 820 volunteers.
Our goal for the 2009 March Minnesota FoodShare campaign in the Northfield area is to raise 110,000 dollars and/or pounds of food. This amount will enable us to meet the need of hungry neighbors as the economy rebounds. Your donations are essential to end hunger here in our community! Please join us during the month of March and help us reach this year’s goal by making a contribution. Checks may be sent to the Northfield CAC Food Shelf, 1651 Jefferson Parkway, HS200, Northfield, MN 55057. Food items can be placed in collection bins at Cub Foods or Econo Foods.
